New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards empower future leaders with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to make key contributions to economic, social and political development within ASEAN nations. 170 New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards are allocated for eligible students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia and Nepal, to undertake postgraduate study at a tertiary institution in New Zealand.


1. Vietnamese Students

New Zealand ASEAN Scholars awards are for full-time postgraduate level study, i.e. Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters degrees or Doctorates (PhD) in New Zealand. An indicative allocation of 30 scholarships is available for Vietnamese nationals who wish to obtain a postgraduate degree in New Zealand commencing 2013. Successful applicants are entitled to return air travel, full tuition fees, establishment allowance, a living allowance to cover day to day costs, medical and travel insurance and reunion airfare for unaccompanied awardees

  • Agriculture and Rural Development: Animal Health, Plant Health, Agricultural and Horticultural Science, Food Safety and Food Quality, Post Harvest Technologies, Biotechnology, Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics, Aquaculture, Value Chain.
  • Environment: Environmental Studies, Environmental Planning and Management,
  • Environmental Economics, Natural Resources Management, Climate Change, Land
  • Administration, Land and Water Resources, Renewable Energy, Oceanography,
  • Seismic/earthquake Engineering, Disaster Risk Management.
  • Education: Early Childhood Education and Development, Education Leadership and
  • Management, Education Policy, Testing and Evaluation, TESOL, Vocational Education.
  • Economic Growth and Governance: Development Economics, International Trade, Trade Policy, Public Financial Management, Banking and Finance, SME Development, Public Management, Public Policy,
  • Law.
  • Tourism:Tourism Management, Sustainable Tourism, Ecotourism.
  • Cross-cutting Disciplines: Human Rights, Gender/Women’s Studies.


Eligibility: Vietnamese Students

  • be a citizen of Viet Nam;
  • not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country
  • not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds, or who is eligible to hold, citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country;
  • hold a recognised Bachelors degree for Masters candidates and Masters degree for PhD candidates;
  • have an unconditional offer of place from a tertiary institution in New Zealand;
  • be under 40 years of age at the time of application for Masters and under 45 years of age at the time of application for PhD;
  • have a minimum of two years work experience (candidates under 25 years of age without work experience are eligible to apply if academic excellence and/or future leadership potential are demonstrated).

2. Myanmar Students

Up to 10 New Zealand ASEAN Scholars Awards (NZAS) are available for Myanmar candidates for full-time postgraduate study at one of nine eligible New Zealand institutions. Two scholarships are reserved for officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Field of Study - Myanmar Students

  • Agriculture: Phytosanitary, agri-business management, sericulture, vegetables production, livestock, bio-security, food sciences, post-rice harvest processing
  • Business: Management, leadership, economics
  • Disaster Risk Management: Renewable energy, climate change adaptation, natural resource management
  • Sustainable Tourism: Ecotourism, tourism management
  • Governance: Law, justice, legal and judicial reform, human rights, gender equity, development
  • Private Sector: Value chain development, trade facilitation, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) development, private sector management
  • Public Sector: Administration, policy, management


Eligibility - Myanmar Students

  • Applicants must be a Myanmar citizen
  • aged not over 40 years, and have been residing in Myanmar for the last two years.

3. Mongolians and Nepalese Students


These scholarships are available to applicants from Mongolia and Nepal to undertake postgraduate full-time study at one of the ten eligible New Zealand education institutions.Up to 2 scholarships are offered to applicants from Mongolia and up to 3 scholarships are offered to applicants from Nepal.

Eligibility - Mongolia and Nepalese Students

  • be a citizen Mongolians or Nepal
  • be residing in your country of citizenship, preferably for at least two years prior to application
  • not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia, or another developed country
  • not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds, or who is eligible to hold, citizenship or permanent residence of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country
  • be aged 17 or over before the scholarship start date
  • be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for a qualification already in progress in New Zealand or another country†
  • not have completed, or nearly completed, a qualification at a similar level 
  • satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand education institution at which the qualification is to be undertaken, including English language criteria
  • have been working in your home country since completing their highest tertiary qualification gained to date, preferably for at least two years prior to application
  • be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the relevant sector in your home country, and to your country’s development in general
  • be able to take up the scholarship in the academic year for which it is offered
